6 and under (Sub-Primary), 7-8 (Primary), 9-10 (Bantam), 11-12 (Midget), 13-14 (Youth),
15-16 (Intermediate)  Age groups based on age as of meet day – January 11, 2009.

Note:  Some event may have 7th and 8th place medals

Event Qualification

The best 7 times in the 55 meter, 55 meter hurdle, and  the best 6 times in the 200 meter heats qualify for the finals. All other events are finals, resolved by time if multiple sections are held.

Team Scoring

Trophies awarded to top 10 finishing teams.  No scoring for relays or age 5-6 events.
Scoring: 1st – 10,   2nd – 8,   3rd – 6,   4th – 5,   5th – 4,   6th – 3,   7th – 2,   8th – 1 
Some running events have only 6-7 scoring places.

Affiliation

An athlete who enters with a club affiliation may not change to another club during the meet.
Clubs may not combine together in the scoring.

Registration
Fee

$13 per athlete (includes 3 individual events, at most 2 running).
$12 per relay team (relay not included in event limits).
$6 for EACH extra event (maximum of 2 extra events)

Deadline

All entries must be received by  9 pm on Thursday, January 8, 2009.
Late entries accepted at discretion of meet director (will cost $25 if accepted).

Admission
Fee

$5 for each spectator age 14+  (may be bought in advance or on day of meet)
$2 for each child 5-13 who is not a registered athlete
Free admission for children under age 5

Facilities

200 meter track.  Fully automatic timing.  Bathrooms available.  Concession stand open during meet.

Event
Changes

Coaches and athletes may change the events they compete in if they e-mail the changes to
needhamtrackclub@aol.com by 9 pm Thursday, January 8, 2009.  Running event changes after this time are charged $3 per event and must be made before meet day. Race day changes are at the discretion of the meet director.  Relay event entries will be accepted up to one hour before the event.

Coaches and parents may substitute athletes if they e-mail the changes to our web site,  needhamtrackclub@aol.com by  9 pm on Thursday, January 8, 2009. 

E-mail

If you e-mail changes, be sure to include the athlete’s name, town, club, and age. If substituting an athlete, you must return a completed registration for the new athlete.

Equipment

Runners must use batons and shot puts provided by the meet.  ¼ inch pyramid or Christmas tree spikes are permitted (in track area only).  Bring non-spiked shoes for use outside of the track area. Starting blocks are provided and can be used in the 55 Meter Dash and 55 Meter Hurdles only.

Event
Conflicts

Athletes at field events should notify the field event official if they have to leave to check in and/or compete at a running event.  If an athlete misses an attempt at a field event (or height for high jump), the field event official can, at their discretion, provide accommodation if it does not disrupt the logistics and time schedule of the event.

Runner
Numbers

Runner numbers should be placed on the front of the jersey.  Hip numbers should go on the LEFT hip for events on the track oval.  Hip numbers should go on the RIGHT hip for the 55 meter and hurdles.

Running Event Confirmation

Upon arriving at the meet or in all cases at least 45 minutes before the start of an event, runners, their parents, or coaches must go to the run event confirmation table to confirm their intention to run in the events they are registered for.  Heat and lane assignments will be made based on these confirmations. Exception:  Age 5-6 do not have to confirm their events – just show up ready to run.
Important:  Even if registered for an event, you will not be permitted to run unless you confirm your intentions at the running event confirmation table.

Relays

All runners on a relay team must be the same sex.  Each athlete  must not exceed the age requirement for the age group of the relay they are competing in.  However, younger age athletes may compete on relays for older age groups.  Relay teams may mix runners from different teams and unattached.

Age 5-6
Events

All age 5-6 events will be non-competitive.  Ribbons (no trophies or medals) will be awarded.
No times or places will be recorded.  There are no penalties for event changes for age 5-6 year olds.

Sportsmanship

Athletes and/or teams may be ejected from the meet for unsportsmanlike conduct of coaches, athletes, parents, family, or friends. Parents and coaches are responsible for their athletes’ conduct.

Arrangements are being made at local hotels for reduced rates.  Please look on our web site.

Changes from last year’s meet

  • 1500 Meter Run instead on 1 Mile Run; includes age 7-8
  • No high jump for age 7-8; no 400 meter for age 5-6
  • Race day confirmation of running event registration

ATHLETE OF THE MEET


Eligibility

Any athlete aged 7-16.  There will be 10 trophies. 
One for the top boy and girl in ages 7-8, 9-10, 11-12, 13-14, and 15-16
One age group winner will be awarded overall Athlete of the Meet.

Nomination

Coaches or parents can make nominations by filling out a written form available at the scoring table - only one nomination per child, please.  Nominator is responsible for

  • Recording top 1-3 events on nomination form
  • Recording the times and marks from these events (from posted results) on form

Criteria

The award criteria include:

  • Spectacular mark(s) in one or two events (meet record)
  • Very strong performance across 3 events
  • Timeliness of getting information into scoring table
  • Sportsmanship of athlete, parents, coaches, and team
  • Only the best 1-3 events count

Logistics

Filled out sheet must be returned to the Scoring table prior to the start of the team relay.  Meet officials will make any late adjustments.

Winning

You must be present at the end of the meet to win Athlete of the Meet - no trophies are  mailed.  Decisions of meet director and meet officials are final.

FAQs

Do I have to win multiple events?
Certainly multiple event wins are helpful.  However, you can compete in just one event and have such a fantastic mark that you become an AOM.

What if results haven’t been posted for some events by the start of the relay?
Be sure to turn in your AOM form before the start of the relay – even if incomplete. Wait for  the results, then go to the results table and ask that your AOM form be updated.  All updates must be completed by the end of the relays.

                        
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Why do I have to specify the events that I will be competing in prior to the meet?
 So we can properly seed and schedule the meet to ensure there is enough time to get all events completed. Also, we are going to all electronic scoring which demands we have detailed event information in advance.
Why do I have to confirm my running event registration at the meet 45 minutes before the event?
In order to properly seed heats and assign lanes, it is important to know who is actually present at the meet and intending to compete.

Any restrictions on relay teams?
All members on a team must be of the same sex.  Team members may be mixed by club affiliation. Children may move up age groups, but may participate in only one relay race.  Advance registration is recommended, but teams can form and register on race day up to one hour before the race.
Who is eligible to compete?
Any athlete who is born after January 11, 1992.
What are the age groups?
2-year age groups (age 5-6, 7-8, 9-10, 11-12, 13-14, and 15-16).  Age as of January 11, 2009.
Can I compete in a different age group from where my age is?
In relays, children may run in a relay for an age group older than their natural age group.  In an individual event, you can compete in an older age group if you are registered in that age group for all events.
Can I use my own shot put, baton, or starting blocks?
No, all of these will be supplied..
Can I use spikes and starting blocks?
You can use ¼”  pyramid or Christmas tree spikes, but only in the track area. Pin spikes are not permitted. Change into flat shoes when moving elsewhere in the building. 
Will the meet be held if there is inclement weather?
We will always try to hold the meet.  In the very rare occasion when dangerous weather conditions do cause us to change the meet schedule, you will find that update on www.needhamtrack.org on meet day morning.  We will also try to e-mail that update to those on our mailing list.
