Needham Track Club Wins 16th Annual Mayor's Cup !
Over 20 runners ages 7 through 14 braved the elements this past Sunday and represented the Needham Track Club at the 16th Annual 2005 Mayors Cup race. The 1.1 mile race was held at Franklin Park in Boston. In sloppy and wet cross country conditions, NTCs girls racing team won in impressive fashion taking 1st, 9th, 12th, 13th and 16th places out of 149 runners. With this win, the Needham Track Club has first place team finishes in two of the last three years sandwiched around a 2nd place finish in '04.
Leading the way was Meghan Krueger becoming the first ever overall champion
for the club. Also scoring for the NTC were Kate Connolly and Annie Ecsedy,
both 8th graders and cross country co-captains at Needham's Pollard school,
Molly McLaughlin of Westwood and Jenny Donnolly of Wellesley. While the team
finish was based on the top finishers, many of the NTC runners finished high
in their age divisions. Full race results are available on the Cool Running
website: http://www.coolrunning.com/results/05/ma/Oct23_Mayors_set10.shtml.
Coach Brian Hall stated that "Meghan was terrific today. Out of all the great athletes (Marlis Gnirke, Anna Lukes, Alyse Rocco, Molly Pistrang...) we've had who are now starring for their high schools, this is our first individual Mayor's Cup champion." Coach Teresa Prego adds that "Meghan won an impressive Tiffany Bowl that she's supposedly going to keep filled with M&Ms."
The team will now prepare for the Junior Olympics being held at Bryant College in November. A top 3 team finish there will qualify the team for Nationals.
